Day 993

I watched the film Somewhere tonight. I have a difficult time talking about this movie. I want to say that it’s not narrative but it actually is. It’s minimalistic and more of a character sketch than a story. It feels just like it was designed to feel: as if it’s only a short (but perhaps important) single scene from someone’s life. So I do believe Sofia Coppola accomplished everything she wanted to with it. I thought it was extremely well done and well acted but I hated that I felt in the end if you watched the preview you’ve basically seen the entire film. I guess I’m just a sucker for a more complex plot. Emotionally, the premise was simple but profound and interesting. I like Phoenix and was excited to hear what they did for the score but that was a let down too as they basically only had two songs in the whole film, one of which was already on an album of theirs. In the end, I think Somewhere is a good work of art but just not as engaging as the narrative filmmaking in this country has lead us to expect. But then again, in light of some of her previous work, that may be Sofia Coppola’s style.
