My second overnight shift in the ER was a lot different but still bearable. It helped to have another good attending and resident duo. A CT scanner was down so it was taking forever to get people moved out of their rooms. The pod was consistently full but we kept the same patients for most of the night so there wasn’t too much action. Couple that with not having any traumas and it was a long shift. My lack of sleep started to catch up with me too; by 5am I was dead tired. All that said, I still prefer a slow, overnight shift in the ER to almost any other shift anywhere else that I’ve had so far.
